Helmut Friess, MD

As of July 2007, Helmut Friess is a Professor of Surgery at the Technische Universität Munich, Germany.  He graduated from the Medical School in Ulm, Germany in 1988 and was trained in surgery at the University of Ulm, Germany (Prof. Hans Beger), and the University of Bern (Prof. Markus Büchler), Switzerland. Helmut Friess became Professor of Surgery at the University of Heidelberg in 2003 and was Vice-Chairman of the Department of General Surgery, (Prof. Markus Büchler) from October 2001 until he took his position with the TU-Munich in 2007.

Professor Friess is a specialist in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery (HPB), with a concentration in pancreatic surgery.

Prof. Friess has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers and is a member of the Editorial board of a number of international journals such as Digestive Surgery, Langenbeck’s Archives , Journal of the Pancreas and Pancreatology.

He is Secretary of the European Digestive Surgery (EDS) and the European Pancreatic Club (EPC).
