C. Wright Pinson, MD, MBA, FACS
Wright Pinson attended Miami University and the University of Colorado where he graduated with distinction in Physics. He worked as an engineer for IBM and at the same time completed a Master=s in Business Administration. Following this he attended medical school at Vanderbilt University. He took his general surgery training at the University of Oregon and completed three fellowships, one in cardiovascular physiology as an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Oregon Health Sciences University, one in gastrointestinal surgery at the Lahey Clinic and one in transplantation at Harvard University.
After completing his training, he started the first liver transplantation program in the Pacific Northwest in 1988 at Oregon Health Sciences University, the first liver transplantation program in the V.A. system in 1989 in Portland, OR and then was recruited to Vanderbilt University as Professor of Surgery to start the liver transplant program and liver surgery division in 1990. In 1993, he became the Surgical Director of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center. His other administrative posts have included Interim Chairman of Surgery 1993 - 1995, Vice-Chairman 1995-2001, Chairman of the Medical Board of Vanderbilt University Medical Center 1997-1999, and Chief of Staff of the Vanderbilt Hospital 1997-present. Most recently, he was named H. William Scott Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department. He has been active in the teaching of medical students and residents and has served as the program director for the Vanderbilt Integrated General Surgery Residency Program.
C. Wright Pinson is an active clinical researcher and maintains a laboratory in the field of transplantation surgery having received numerous grants and recently both the Sawyers research award and the Liddle research mentoring award. He has authored more than 250 contributions to the literature, given more than 500 scientific presentations and lectures. He is on the Editorial Board of Annals of Surgery and the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He has boards in surgery and critical care. He is on the board of the United Network for Organ Sharing, chairs the surgery section of the Southern Medical Association, is past president of the Tennessee Transplant Society, and is president-elect of the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. He is active in the International HPBA, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American Surgical Association and The Halsted Society among others. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Physician Executives.
